FUTURE TECHIES Team meetings

OCTOBER 24, 2024 MEETING

Another good meeting. The mentors, Dr. Ali Rafieymehr and Mr. David Charest combined Sessions 6 and 7 of the Engineering Notebook in this week’s meeting. We started by going through ocean career opportunities listed on pages 30-31 of the Engineering Notebook. Time was given to the team members to go over those opportunities (Marine Biologist, Oceanographer, Submarine Pilot, Marine Geologist, Underwater Photographer, and Marine Educator) and pick a job that interested them and why they picked those jobs. Next, the mentors asked the team members to brainstorm and come up with the first draft of the story that they would like to work on for the Festival 2024. The team captains (Kaylee and Mason) were then asked to present their stories. The members enjoyed the assignment very much. Two members of each team were then assigned to be the coders and work on what code/program they need to write over the next couple of weeks to implement their stories. The term “pseudocode” was then introduced to the members. Not an easy term for elementary students. The other members of each team then worked on setting up their ocean mat with species/animals for each of the ocean zones (Sunlight, Twilight, and Abyssal).  Following videos show most of the great work that the teams performed.

OCTOBER 17, 2024 MEETING

We had a very good meeting. Both teams did a great job. They followed the instructions for Session 5 of the Engineering Notebook under the mentorship of Dr. Ali Rafieymehr and Mr. David Charest. The following videos were created when both teams separately were working on setting up the ocean mat for Abyssal Ocean Zone. They then wrote a small program for the submarine model that they previously built to travel through the Abyssal Zone.
